Mater is imprinted on pseudo-narcotics odors (NOT including Marijuana). He is working well independently in open areas and has learned to follow scent cones flawlessly. He will visualize and search objects on his own, and is currently honing his detailing skills. He has a good foundation but will thrive with a handler who has time to spend building a partnership with him. Mater was on the kill-list at a shelter due to severe kennel stress. His drive levels are super-high, which was not boding well to the sedentary life of an animal shelter. Mater settles quickly into home life and could easily be a K9 that a handler can integrate into his household. He loves couch time, but when it’s time to work, Mater becomes a machine. When he’s out working, his hunt AND prey drives are both very high, and he constantly wants to have something in his mouth (Nylabone, Kong, Ball). I have not yet seen him give up while searching. His pain tolerance is also very high, so he is a reward-based learner rather than compulsion. He learned the Kong-release using 2-toy-reward reps. He has been tested with noises (gun shots and thunder) and is not phased by noise. He also will work through water. He belongs to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, MD, but will be DONATED to an LEO who needs a K9 and is willing to put in the work to finish him out. He will need to be transitioned onto real narcotics from pseudo.
